Literature
I list here the references (and some internet pages) I mostly use to attach the correct label to my finds.
General
- Berschauer, D.P. & Clark, R.N. 2018. Sea Shells of Southern California. Marine Shells of the Californian Province. – 131 pp. The San Diego Shell Club; San Diego, Ca.
Surprisingly, this nicely illustrated guide does not share too many species with the Gulf of California.
- Bertsch, H. & Aguilar Rosas, L.E. 2016. Invertebrados Marinos del Noroeste de México. Marine Invertebrates of Northwest Mexico. – Universidad Autónoma de Baja California, 432 pp. Ensenada.
A well illustrated guide for all invertebrates of the Gulf of California, the Pacific coast of Baja California and parts of the Mexican coast south of the peninsula. The book shows mainly living animals and gives very detailed information about the habitats and distribution.
- Brusca, R.C. 1980. Common intertidal marine invertebrates of the Gulf of California. 2nd edition. – 513 pp. University of Arizona Press; Tuscon, Ariz.
A guide to all common species of the Gulf of California.
- Gurgo Salice, P. & Cáceres, C. 2021. Baja Californian sea shells. – 232 + XXXII p. Monee IL.
This recently published book is more an iconography than a field guide. It shows on 110 colour pages around 1100 species.
- Keen, A.M. 1971. Sea shells of tropical West America. Marine Mollusks from Baja California to Peru: Marine Molluscs from Baja California to Peru. – 1064 pp. Stanford University Press; Stanford, Ca.
More than fifty years old, this book is - at least for the gastropods - still the most comprehensive compilation.
- Morris, P.A. 1966. Pacific coast shells. – 295 pp. The Easton Press; Norwalk, Conn.
Also somehow old, but it shows the most common shells.
- Moser Marlett, C. 2014. Shells on a desert shore. – 281 pp. University of Arizona Press; Tuscon, Ariz.
A wonderful book with excellent drawings on the shells in the central part of the Gulf of California and their use by the Seri people.
- Ortíz-Arellano, M.A.
Although this work deals only with intertidal species, and only around 70 species are shown, it gives good descriptions, illustrations, size updates and habitat information.
- Rehder, H.A. et al. 1981. The Audubon Society Field Guide to Borth American Seashells. – 894 pp. Alfred A. Knopf; New York, N.Y.
Although better illustrated than Morris (1966), the mix of eastern Pacific, Caribbean and western Atlantic makes the work with the book a little bit difficult.
Bivalves
Coan, E.V. & Valentich-Scott, P. 2012. Bivalve Seashells of Tropical West America. Marine Bivalve Mollusks from Baja California to Northern Peru. – 1258 pp. Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History.
This recently published monograph is excellent for the taxonomy of the bivalves.
- Huber, M. 2010. Compendium of Bivalves. A Full-Color Guide to 3'300 of the World's Marine Bivalves. A Status on Bivalvia after 250 Years of Research. – 904 pp. Conchbooks (Hackenheim).
- Huber, M. 2015. Compendium of Bivalves 2. A Full-Color Guide to the Remaining Seven Families. A Systematic Listing of 8'500 Bivalve Species and 10'500 Synonyms. – 907 pp. Conchbooks (Harxheim).
This two volume compilation is the most complete ever published on marine Bivalvia.
ter Poorten, J.J. 2024. A Taxonomic Iconography of Living Cardiidae. – 600 pp. Conchbooks (Harxheim).
New monograph on the world-wide Cardiidae with various taxonomic changes that also concern the fauna from the Gulf of California.
